What is an over/under?
A bet on combined scoring, not on who wins — and how pace, weather, and ballpark quietly decide whether it goes over or under.
An over/under, or total, is a bet on the combined score of both teams finishing above (over) or below (under) a number the sportsbook sets. It ignores who wins entirely — you're wagering on how much scoring happens. Totals are driven by tempo, matchup, weather, and venue rather than which side is better, which makes them a distinct analytical problem from picking a winner and a natural home for pace and park-factor modeling.
Totals rise with fast pace, strong offenses, hitter-friendly parks, and warm, thin air; they fall with slow tempo, elite pitching or defense, and cold or windy conditions. In baseball the venue alone can swing a total by multiple runs — our Park Factors put Coors Field at a 1.31 run factor and Oracle Park near 0.92, a gap that meaningfully shifts the number.
If the total is 8.5 and the teams combine for 9, the over wins; 8 and the under wins. On a whole-number total like 9, landing exactly on 9 is a push and stakes are refunded, which is why many totals carry a half-point. Standard −110 pricing means you still must clear the vig to profit.
