What is leverage?
The gap between how good a DFS player is and how many people are playing him — the quiet engine of tournament edge.
In daily fantasy, leverage is the edge created when a player's real chance of scoring well is higher than his ownership suggests. Rostering a strong player the field is under-playing gives you outsized upside: if he hits, you rise while most lineups don't. Leverage is the deliberate pursuit of that gap — favoring high-upside, lower-owned players in tournaments — and it is why the best DFS players think about the field, not just about projections.
Two players can have identical projections but very different value in a tournament. If one is 45% owned and the other 8%, the low-owned player carries far more leverage: when he scores, you gain ground on the field instead of moving with it. Leverage formalizes the intuition that in a GPP you want to be right in ways most entrants are not — see ownership.
Leverage is not blindly playing low-owned players — a bad player nobody rosters has no leverage, just low ownership. The target is players who are genuinely good and underplayed. Our optimizer pairs projections with realized ownership and correlation so it surfaces real leverage rather than empty contrarianism.

Is leverage just playing low-owned players?No. A weak player nobody rosters has no leverage. True leverage requires a player who is both genuinely good and underplayed by the field — upside and scarcity together.
Where does leverage matter most?In large-field tournaments (GPPs), where beating thousands of lineups requires differentiation. In cash games, where you only need to beat about half the field, leverage is irrelevant.
